Last Night of the 2023 BBC Proms

Ten years after Marin Alsop became the first woman to conduct the famous Last Night of the Proms, she returned to the Royal Albert Hall to lead a celebratory end to the 2023 BBC Proms season. Alsop conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra, soprano Lise Davidsen, and cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason in a diverse program that highlighted the evolution of classical music and the future of the genre. The program ranged from patriotic fanfares to two world premieres—James B Wilson’s 1922, commissioned for the BBC’s centenary last year, and Laura Karpman’s Higher. Further. Faster. Together., from the upcoming superhero film The Marvels. After several years of disruption, attendance levels for this year’s Last Night at the Proms rose above pre-pandemic levels.
