This December, Marin Alsop leads the newly formed Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra for a three-city tour of South Africa stopping in Johannesburg (December 15), Durban (December 17), and Cape Town (December 21).
Commencing on 15 December 2022, the tour will take the Orchestra to diverse South African communities, performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with accomplished soloists and local choirs.
Alsop shares, “I’ve had the privilege of performing all over the world, but performing in a three-city tour of South Africa is a first for me – and I couldn’t be more excited. Music and the arts have a unique power to elevate society and I appreciate the fact that this orchestra is not only intent on achieving the highest artistic goals, but is also taking its responsibility to the community seriously.”
Alsop closes 2022 leading a New Year’s Celebration with the Minnesota Orchestra and pianist Awadagin Pratt, conducting Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Jessie Montgomery’s Rounds for Piano and String Orchestra, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade (December 31 and January 1).
