Southbank Centre Changing Minds: OAE/Alsop

…the rapport between her [Patricia Kopatchinskaja] and the OAE under the conductor Marin Alsop was tangible … Opening the concert with one of Brahms’s most perfectly chiseled works, the Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Alsop drew exquisitely transparent playing. She saved her rhythmic drive for Schumann’s Rhenish Symphony.

[Kopatchinskaja] and her gut-stringed violin pounced, pleaded, skittered and swung through it, and Alsop and the orchestra backed her choices all the way; together they made the opening of the slow movement something strikingly amorphous.

Marin Alsop, an associate artist of the Southbank Centre, was greeted with enormous affection by the audience. Long may her association with the OAE continue.
