Naxos Records have joined in the Leonard Bernstein centenary celebrations by releasing a box set of Marin’s complete recordings of his works. The collection features Marin’s critically acclaimed recordings of Bernstein’s symphonies, Chichester Psalms, Mass and Serenade as well as new and world premiere recordings and an insightful new documentary. The recordings were made with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra as well as soloists including Philippe Quint and Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
Alsop was mentored by Bernstein during her development as a conductor and is a noted champion of his work:
“Leonard Bernstein was my hero as a child and my mentor as an adult. Like the man himself, his music transcends barriers and breaks boundaries, reminding us of music’s incredible power to speak directly to our souls. Fun, glorious, intense, outrageous, comforting, confrontational, profound… this is the Leonard Bernstein I knew and loved.”
Marin continues her Bernstein commemorations throughout the season, with the next performance coming in April when she conducts his Mass at the Royal Festival Hall in London with the Chineke! Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. She also conducts concerts of his work with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and with the Chicago Symphony at the Ravinia Festival.
