&ldquoAs Alsop faced the cellos and drew from them the most tremendously shaped phrases with every inflection of her baton, you were aware of being in the presence of greatness.&rdquo

Marin Alsop celebrates 20 years at the helm of the Cabrillo Festival

20 years at Cabrillo

In Santa Cruz, California, July 31 through August 14, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music will celebrate Marin Alsop’s 20th anniversary season as Music Director/Conductor. Fifteen composers-in-residence will join Marin and the award-winning Festival Orchestra for nine West Coast Premieres, two U.S. Premieres, and seven World Premieres written in honor of the Maestra. Marin welcomes guest artists pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, guitarist D.J. Sparr, and French horn player Kristin Jurkscheit; and NPR Radio’s Scott Simon joins her for a special anniversary event. Participating composers include Mason Bates, Margaret Brouwer, Chiayu, Anna Clyne, Michael Daugherty, Tina Davidson, Robin de Raaff, Zosha Di Castri, Pierre Jalbert, Elena Kats-Chernin, Shuko Mizuno, Behzad Ranjbaran, Christopher Rouse, George Tsontakis, and Dan Welcher.

“The highlight of the Festival is a sense of everyone truly being there for the composers–almost cheering them on with every new work–and it is stunning to see. Never have I felt such love from an audience for the music and its creators. The Cabrillo Festival is my artistic oasis. My time there working with the incredible musicians of the Festival Orchestra and our amazing soloists; collaborating with so many living composers; spending time coaching talented young conductors and composers, re-energizes me and reminds me once again why we all are so privileged to be artists!” – Marin Alsop
