Marin Alsop is to return to the BBC Proms for three concerts this summer.
Celebrating its 122nd season, and coinciding with the Olympics staged in Rio de Janeiro, one of the highlights is a carnival of music from Latin America. Marin will conduct her Brazilian forces of the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) in two performances. The first is bookended by infectious, furious dances from Marlos Nobre and Rachmaninov, with music from Heitor Villa-Lobos and Grieg’s Piano Concerto with Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero in between (24 August).
Later that evening, Marin and the São Paulo string players are joined by members of the São Paulo Jazz Symphony Orchestra for a landmark celebration of Brazilian popular-music from the past 100 years (24 August).
In her final concert of the season, Marin conducts the Orchestra of Age of Enlightenment and the fresh voices of the BBC Proms Youth Choir for Verdi’s Requiem (9 September).
Marin is no stranger to the BBC Proms having conducted the Last Night celebrations in 2013 and 2015. She brought OSESP to the BBC Proms in 2012 for their Proms debut.
